Youth work
"I'm a lot more confident as a person. I've been interviewing people I've never met before and presenting a radio show that is broadcast across south London. It's really boosted my confidence." Latesha, 15
In every Oasis Hub, we run youthwork activities which inspire hope, motivate ambition, challenge stereotypes and embrace diversity.
One example of this is Southside Radio, which is based in our Waterloo Hub. Every year, over 200 young people come to Southside to help run the station and do courses in radio and broadcast journalism.
In an area where gangs, guns, knives and youth unemployment have given young people a bad name, Southside Radio provides vital training and opportunity for some of south London's most vulnerable teenagers.
Dom, who manages the station, says, “The first year we ran this project we had reports that youth crime had dropped significantly in the area. The young people learn social and critical thinking skills and the scheme provides a positive alternative to what young people could be doing.”
"Southside gave me confidence and built me up without me even noticing. I got practical experience that I don't think I would have got without Southside." Demi, 18
