Moving on in Uganda
The Bambejja Skills Training Project continues to work with disadvantaged young women (especially single mothers), equipping them with skills which enable them live healthy and independent lives. We are excited to see many of these girls' lives changed through their stories. Susan is one of the girls currently on the program.
Susan, aged 18, lives with her father, step mother and her five siblings. She stopped going to school during her primary education due to an early pregnancy. By the time she joined the project she had a low self esteem and was at risk of being sexually exploited.
As a result of her background and difficult upbringing, Susan's attitude towards life and her fellow colleagues was not good. She could not express herself verbally and was moody most of the time. She also could not get along with her stepmother due to disciplinary issues.
With the help of her father and the Skills Training team, this tension has been resolved.
It is now five months since she joined the project and there is an amazing behavioural change in Susan. She has grown emotionally and spiritually; and she has learnt various skills including tailoring, hairdressing and catering. Susan is doing her placement training at a guest house in Kampala. She has plans for starting her own restaurant on completion of her placement training.
Through the training and counselling provided by Oasis to young women like Susan, 80% of the girls have been able to get jobs, with some of them running their own small businesses and providing for their families.
It's thanks to the support of people like you that we are able to share these stories of success. Supporting Oasis financially helps us to meet the needs of many more young women like Susan.
