Safe in Sound

Last year, the Youth and Community Team in Enfield converted their storage cupboard into a music studio. The studio proved incredibly popular, and in an effort to encourage young people to develop their skills, the team has been running an Arts Award in Music Production over the summer.

EnfieldSeven young people were selected to take part in the scheme, which included training on music production, lyric writing, song structure, rapping and beat-making.

Tutors have been coming in over the summer to train the young people, who are aged 13-16. Apart from teaching music production, the scheme has the secondary aim of encouraging young people to grow in self-esteem and confidence. It also enables them to work as a team, allowing the quieter boys to work in partnership with the more confident ones.

Kate, an Oasis Youth Worker who has been running the project in Enfield said, "It's been fantastic - we ran two sessions last week which were four hours each. It was great to see the young people turning up on time and engaging for the whole session. They're gutted when they can't come to the sessions, and it's great to be able to run something which shows how much we want to invest in them. They've got so much potential."

Funding for the tutors to come in to run the course ran out at the end of the summer. It costs around £35 for a tutor to come in for an hour and produce a track with a young person. If you can, please give a gift today.
