Widespread poverty in Kyrgyzstan is one of the main reasons why many women, men and even children become victims of human traffickers. Every year at least 5,000 people are trafficked from Kyrgyzstan to other countries, e.g. for slave labor in Kazakhstan and Russia and for the sex trade in Turkey and the United Arab Emirates. The trafficking problem in Kyrgyzstan is estimated to be worse than in well-known countries like the Ukraine and Moldova. However, relatively few people know about Kyrgyzstan, the issue is rarely discussed, and as a resultnot enough is being done to prevent trafficking. We want to change all of that. Oasis Kyrgyzstan has a widespread human trafficking prevention program and has plans to start a supported living program for vulnerable girls.
