Access to high quality education in Johannesburg is determined by a child's economic status, leading to high levels of unemployment in a country where there is massive skills shortages in the formal economy.  Up to 60% of people living in some of Johannesburg's poorest communities are unemployed. This is an exciting opportunity to assist in the ‘School Leavers Support Programme’ as well as being a member of Oasis South Africa's pioneering team in Johannesburg.

The successful applicant will:

  • Serve as a key team member implementing the ‘School Leavers' Support Programme’
  • Develop, plan and facilitate life-skills, career counselling  and/or English as a second language sessions for students
  • Conduct regular individual interviews with  school leavers 
  • Research career opportunities and arrange job or learning opportunities for students
  • Co-ordinate a mentoring programme for the students, including providing ongoing training and support for volunteer mentors
  • Participate in the establishment of the Oasis base in Johannesburg, including working in other projects as required

Person specification:

  • Have experience of working with young adults and/or older teenagers
  • Be a patient and enthusiastic team-player
  • Be creative and an independent worker
  • Have a heart for young adults and vulnerable people
  • Have experience of careers guidance, teaching English (as a second language or otherwise) and/or life skills training for young adults

  • Participate in the establishment of the Oasis base in Johannesburg, including working in other projects as required

The SA National Aids Council's 2007 report states that an estimated 5.54 million South Africans are HIV positive. South Africa's national health services cannot carry this burden alone and has desperately called on all sectors of society to get involved! You will be part of an exciting new program, that gets along side individuals in communities and empower them to take action.

The successful applicant will:

  • Work with community health care workers in implementing health care, through home visits, running chronic disease support groups, presenting prevention of sexual abuse programs in schools and running a short “healthy living” courses.
  • Be involved in networking and building partnerships
  • Be involved within the community building relationships
  • Be a part of a team and thus be able and willing to contribute uniquely to the growth of the community wellness programs

Person Specification

  • Must be a qualified nurse
  • Experience in community health or at least be willing to learn
  • Creative in designing and implementing a programme around staying healthy and preventing disease
  • Be enthusiastic and passionate about people and all aspects of community health.
  • Have a holistic knowledge of community health; this includes ways of staying healthy and preventing disease (in mind, body and spirit), managing and treating acute and chronic illness, integrating environmental and social concerns affecting health.
