This voluntary position is located at Viva’s Regional Centre in Kampala, Uganda and offers a unique opportunity for someone wishing to have overseas experience in an international development role. As a key member of the international mobilisation team, you will provide a communication function to support and develop the role of Viva Africa in its work to promote collaborative action on behalf of children. You will also be responsible for helping to raise funds for Viva Africa, in collaboration with programme staff and the international fundraising team, in order to allow several different initiatives to take place throughout Africa to positively impact the lives of children at risk. Location: Mbale, Eastern Uganda

Overview:

The role is based in Mbale, Uganda, working with the Beersheba Project which focuses on the needs and rights of vulnerable girls in an economically disadvantaged community. Amongst other services, the Beersheba project provides a 1 year intensive ‘informal education’ course in literacy, numeracy and life skills to girls who are not in school.

In this role, the Education Consultant will work alongside local staff at the Beersheba Project to provide teaching training, educational support and specifically to ensure that outcomes and learning is measured and documented.

The Successful Applicant Will:

  • Conduct needs assessment of project staff and plan an appropriate course of intervention and teacher training for the duration of the placement.
  • Provide support to other staff members in teaching / training as appropriate (e.g. adult literacy coordinator, esteem trainer).
  • Provide mentorship to all Beersheba staff in the Education and Family Department who work directly with the children, building up their skills and confidence.
  • In all activities related to working in teams, departments, or with other people, ensure that the Code of Conduct is followed and that all relationships with colleagues are characterised by servant-heartedness, consideration, selflessness, courtesy and love.

Personal Specification:

  • Experience in educational programmes planning and implementation prefered
  • Qualification in a relevant field prefered
  • Experience in working with children with learning disabilities prefered

The Sucessful Applicant Will:

  • Work as a volunteer nurse, doctor, or physio with Mukisa Foundation, a centre for disabled children in central Kampala which serves 300 children and their families.
  • Assess children at the Mukisa Foundation Tuesday – Friday each week. Mukisa gives out medication to children every afternoon.
  • Conduct home visits and outreach with Mukisa staff on Mondays
  • Develop strategic connections between smaller organisations in Uganda working with disabled children to enhance the services provided in the area.
  • Participate in community outreach events with Mukisa and other members of the VIVA/CRANE network.

Personal Specification:

  • Trained professional nurse, doctor, or physio thereapist
  • Experience of working with children a bonus but not strictly required
  • Experience in or knowledge of tropical medicine a bonus

The Successful Applicant Will:

Work alongside the Fundraising and Communications Officer to raise awareness of and fundraising for Oasis Uganda and its needs and to research and develop new ideas for marketing Oasis Uganda and its work, in both the UK and Uganda.

This role would ideally be for a 2 year period, with half the time spent in UK and half in Uganda (For example 9 months in Uganda, 6 in UK, 6 in Uganda, 3 in UK). It is a self-funded role.

Overview

  • Fundraise and raise awareness of Oasis Uganda both throughout the UK and in Uganda through building links between UK companies, churches and schools with Oasis Uganda.

In Uganda

  • Spend time with the Project Managers and the Communications and Publicity Officer in Oasis Uganda to understand funding needs and to help build up resources for fundraising both in Uganda and in UK, such as fliers, powerpoints, proposals, special fundraising drives etc.
  • Devise and implement good campaign planning and strategies for UK and ensure the relevant Oasis Uganda staff are aware of and taught how to do future campaigns.
  • Learn all details about Oasis Uganda and its projects, to be as effective as possible in knowing how to educate others and build support both within Oasis and its staff and with current and future sponsors.
  • In linking UK donors with Uganda, bring up to date ideas, marketing plans and strategies out to Uganda and help to implement them.
  • Help to build, organise, educate and coordinate visiting teams from the UK.
  • Attend regular networking events, build networking links and encourage and educate staff on how to be an effective networker.
  • Work alongside the Communications and Fundraising Officer to source new fundraising opportunities in Uganda through visiting Embassies, donors companies etc.
  • Support and develop the 'Bakwaano Baffe' alumni scheme in Uganda.

In UK

  • Make and maintain links with donors in UK through visiting them, doing fundraising events, meeting up with high value donors, sourcing new partners, running special events etc.
  • Attend follow up meetings and events with returning teams and volunteers, to ensure they feel connected to Oasis Uganda.
  • Run 'Bakwaano Baffe' activities in UK for past alumni who have visited Oasis Uganda

Personal Specification:

  • Experience in fundraising desirable

The Successful Applicant Will:

  • Work with the Net2Work team to ensure that Oasis Uganda has a safe, reliable and effective computer network and data management system.
  • Provide ITC training and support to the Head of IT Training and Maintenance and Systems Administrator, to build their capacity in the technical oversight of Oasis Uganda.
  • Work alongside Net2Work staff to provide training to all staff within Oasis on managing electronic data, effective use of computers etc.
  • Input into the Net2Work annual plan as necessary.
  • Alongside technical staff, carry out a comprehensive evaluation of current situation with regard to computers (networking, safety, storage, anti virus etc), and implement recommendations for improvement where possible.
  • Ensure systems are put in place to monitor the security of software and information currently held on computers.
  • In any financial transactions, follow all procedures within the Oasis Uganda Finance Manual.
  • Work alongside the Fundraising and Communications Officer to ensure the Oasis Uganda website is up to date and all relevant information is included.
  • Build links with computer companies and commercial organisations in Uganda and globally to help with sustainability (e.g. sourcing free computers, sponsored anti-virus, building capacity of Net2Work staff through training by corporates etc.).
  • Take every opportunity to raise funds for Oasis Uganda though promoting its work, fundraising and networking.
  • Work alongside Net2Work staff to ensure that all electronic information held by staff within Oasis Uganda is secure by developing systems for backing up and managing it.
  • Assist the Net2Work Global Coordinator in any new developments for Net2Work.
  • Support the Technical Staff in keeping appropriate and updated records of technical systems or procedures to ensure that people are aware of these and adhere to them.
