Uganda

Map of UgandaAlthough stability is slowly being restored across Uganda, the history of civil war, violence and famine has left its mark on the landscape.

Oasis first began work in Kampala, Uganda's capital, and since then its work has expanded and we are now using our expertise and experience to work in Mbale, Gulu and possibly Pader.

Penny's Story

Penny, aged 25, lives with her grandmother in Gulu. Having watched her parents tortured to death in 2004, Penny was traumatised, reserved and could not express herself openly as she had little trust in people and hated God for allowing her parents to be killed. She was not able to complete her studies because her grandmother was not able to continue supporting her in school. Without any hope for the future she ended up getting pregnant and abandoned by the father of the child.

When Penny joined Oasis Net2Work in August 2008, she had very low self esteem and could not make friends easily. Through the devotions and character development skill training sessions, Penny became a Christian and has since improved in her self esteem and confidence; and started interacting freely with other people. Due to this noticeable change and the computer skills she acquired, World Vision Area Development Programme employed Penny as their Community Facilitator (CF).

In addition to the above, with the entrepreneurship skills she acquired, Penny managed save money from her salary and she started a poultry project with 200 chickens. Penny’s future is a bright one now, as she plans to go for further computer studies. This is what she says, “Oasis should continue training other people in the community and if possible, introduce diploma course.”
