Health and HIV/AIDS
Here at Oasis, we believe that good health is about a lot more than having access to medicine, water and sanitation. It’s a fundamental factor of human existence and because of this, it’s an integral part of all that Oasis does across the globe.
Much of this work is focussed around the issue of HIV and AIDS. There are some 42 million people in the world living with HIV/AIDS and a massive 70% of them are in sub-Saharan Africa, where AIDS has already killed 14 million people. In the worst hit countries, a whole generation is being wiped out by AIDS.
Over the years, Oasis has been working hard to build the resources and projects to play our part in fighting this terrible disease, both in the UK and around the world.
Taseen's Story
Taseen's
husband and son both died of an HIV-related illness. At only 25, Taseen
had to care for her sick daughter unsupported and alone. Sadly, by the
time Taseen came to Oasis, her daughter had also lost the fight against
her illness and died. Naturally, Taseen was devastated. Over time and
with the help of the Oasis staff Taseen has been able to come to terms
with her situation. Taseen joined a tailoring course and slowly began
to rebuild her life. She now trains women from the local village in
tailoring and candle making as well as leading Bible studies for the
residents of the AIDS care centre in Mumbai. Despite all the hardship
she faced in the past, Taseen’s life has been transformed and she is an
inspiration to many of the other women Oasis works with in India.
