New ‘Lunchbus’ to help make holiday hunger history in Salford

During term time, every student of Oasis Academy MediaCityUK will receive a lunch.  However, during the school holidays – in a community where 45% of people live in poverty – such a staple requirement cannot always be guaranteed.

To tackle rising rates of holiday hunger during school holidays, Oasis Hub MediaCityUK in Salford has launched an innovative lunch club.  Lunchbox, ensures that not only do young people have a healthy, balanced meal throughout the holidays, but that they also learn vital cooking skills.

Supporting children and young people in developing and living a healthier lifestyle, the Hub also provides the opportunity to play games and sports, increasing fitness and embedding healthy living.

Lunchbox uses the Oasis Academy MediaCityUK kitchens and community space to prepare meals, serve food and run activities. In the spring and summer months, the Hub uses the sports hall and multi-use games area for sports and outdoor activities.

However, we know that not every young people will be able to make it to the Academy building every day.  Oasis has therefore recently partnered with the Life Centre, a local charity with a shared vision to tackle holiday hunger, to pilot our ‘Lunchbus’ project. Lunchbus takes the food directly to the local community, where we can feed local children and young people and facilitate sports and craft activities.

The Hub team have worked hard to adapt the project to fit community needs and to develop a wider relationship with our local partners, with the result that children and young people from the nearby Langworthy and Weaste neighbourhoods have attended, highlighting the real need for this project across this part of the city.

Oasis MediaCityUK and the children and young people we support in Salford are very grateful for the support we receive that makes Lunchbox and Lunchbus possible and helps our work to make hunger history in Salford.
