Oasis Academies are just one part of a broad and inclusive range of community development services (Hubs) working together cohesively for the families we serve, and in particular for those who are most vulnerable.
Hubs operate in the most deprived areas of the country, where as many as 59% of families live below the poverty line, reaching and affecting the lives of 30,000 young people.
Of those 30,000, 52% are entitled to Free School Meals. DOUBLE the countrywide figure of 26% by comparison.
Consequently, an increasing number of families experience enormous pressure to find the extra money needed to provide additional meals when school term ends, often resulting in parents skipping meals or living off cereal so their children can eat. In many of these cases, children as young as 5 are going hungry and it is estimated 4.1 million children will be at risk this summer.
In response to this alarming trend, Oasis has launched a range of activities in 15 community Hubs stretching across: London, Southampton, Bristol, Birmingham, Manchester and Grimsby with the purpose of engaging young people in a stigma free environment where they can access food without embarrassment or having to ask.
Activities are delivered by a combination of trained youth workers and volunteers for 10 weeks of the year, on a 5-day basis, providing 37,500 meals for approximately 3,000 young people.
