4.1m children are already at risk of going hungry this year during the school holidays because of something called Holiday Hunger. The unprecedented nature of the coronavirus epidemic has brought with it, additional uncertainty, as the families of these children plunge into an ever increasing poverty trap they can't escape from. Many of them will be worrying about where their next meal comes from for a very long time.
Please help tackle this alarming crisis.
Your £5 donation can buy a meal for a child
Your £20 donation can buy meals for a family
Oasis works in low income areas where as many as 59% of families live below the poverty line, affecting the lives of 30,000 young people. About half of these are entitled to school lunches but when these stop as schoola close, parents are under enormous pressure to find money for extra meals.Parents often skip meals themselves or live off cereal so their children can eat. Children as young as 5 are going hungry.
So important is this issue, that TV personality chefs Nadiya Hussain MBE and Rosemary Shrager have written an open letter to the press, highlighting the issue and calling on everyone to join the fight to end food poverty which you can read below.
In response to this alarming trend, Oasis Community Hubs in London, Scunthorpe, Bristol, Birmingham, Manchester and Grimsby will be running community food pantries and providing daily lunches for children on a takeaway or delivery basis. Young people can access food without embarrassment - there's no need to ask.
